Frequently Asked Questions

Am I a good candidate for Microblading?

You may not be a good candidate for permanent makeup/microblading if any of the following conditions apply to you:

  • Under the age of 18

  • Pregnant or Nursing

  • Have been on accutane within 1 year

  • You have irritation of the skin of any kind such as blemishes, pimples, rash, psoriasis, eczema, rosacea, sunburn on the area of procedure

  • Tendency to Keloid scars (please contact me)

  • Using Retin-A or Retinols (must stop using 7 days before appointment and avoid reusing 30 days after the procedure)

  • Botox in the brow area* which has altered the placement of your brows (please wait 2 months for the effects to wear off)

  • Serious diseases that can affect your body’s healing process, such as cancer or autoimmune disorders (please consult with your physician)

  • Diabetic (consult your doctor)

  • Undergoing Chemotherapy (consult your doctor)

  • Have epilepsy

  • Have HIV or Hepatitis or any other viral infections and/or diseases – Bleeding Disorders (please consult with your physician)

  • If your previous brow tattoo is too dark (please contact me to send a picture so I can see how faded your old tattoo is)

How long will it last?

Semi-permanent makeup lasts up to 2+ years and will fade over time so a touch is recommended every 12-18 months for maintenance. Fading occurs as your skin and facial structure changes as time goes by but this does not mean that your semi-permanent makeup will completely disappear.

The longevity of your brows will depend on many factors such as: the colour of the pigment used, your skin, health, iron deficiency, sun exposure, exfoliants, treatment of skin (dermabrasion, chemical peels, etc.)

Does it Hurt?

Brows by Melie uses a strong topical anesthetic cream and gel with 5% Lidocaine for numbing before and throughout the procedure for maximum comfort. Pain tolerance and the body’s reaction to anesthetic will vary from person to person. Some clients describe feeling minimal pain and discomfort comparable to threading or waxing; while others sleep throughout the whole procedure. We always do our best to make sure you are comfortable. You may bring 1-2 Extra strength Tylenol to take after our consultation for additional comfort if you have low pain tolerance.

How long is the appointment?

PMU:

The appointment takes 2-3 hours on average from start to finish. The consultation will be the majority of this time. This is not a rushed procedure and we ensure ample time is allotted. Numbing will be on for 20-25 min while I map out your brows to your desired shape.

Brow Lamination/Last Lift:

The appointment takes 1-1.5 hours on average from start to finish. The brow lamination takes only 45 mins, and tinting and grooming take 30-40 minutes depending on how dark you want your brows to be.Lash Lift combo takes 1.5 hours.

How do I prepare for my appointment?

  • Do not drink alcohol, ibuprofen, or caffeine 24 hours before your appointment. This can cause excessive bleeding.

  • Do not take Advil or other blood thinners such as: aspirin, fish oil, niacin, vitamin E, and/or Ibuprofen unless medically necessary, 48-72 hrs prior to your procedure. Extra-strength Tylenol can be taken if you have low pain tolerance.

  • If you have recently tanned this will affect the outcome of the healed color. – Women should not book their appointment during their menstrual cycle as the body is more sensitive during this time causing the procedure to be more painful.

  • If you’ve had laser removal of previous work done by someone else, the treated area has now more scar tissue and can affect the outcome of the result. More sessions may be necessary for the skin to take the pigment.

  • Botox should be done 3 weeks before or 3 weeks after the procedure.

  • Avoid exercising the day of the procedure as this will open up the pores.

  • No waxing, threading, or tinting 3 days before and at least 3 weeks after.

  • You may NOT get the area wet for too long or apply any kind of products (except aftercare products) for at least 8-10 days after. NO makeup on the treated area for 2 weeks.

  • Please remove any makeup on your brows and forehead area.

What is the healing time?

4-5 weeks for complete healing time.

  • Immediately following your procedure, the tattooed area will appear darker and bolder in color and more sharply defined. Slight redness and swelling may occur.

  • Over the next 2 days, it will appear even darker and thicker as scabs begin to form. You must let the scabs naturally flake off bit by bit.

  • After the brows have completely healed and all scabs have flaked off, your eyebrows will become 40% lighter and will shrink in size·

  • Uneven color can be expected as the initial appointment sometimes isn't enough as everyone’s skin holds pigment differently.

What is the process?

15 min – Before photos/videos

30 min – Brow mapping for design.

1.5 hr – Procedure by using pigment and machine/needle + finishing touches

15 min – After photos/videos + aftercare instructions.

* I like to go over my procedure with new clients to make sure you are comfortable and you know what is about to go down!
